You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words?  I'll let the pictures tell the story.......

Apple Writing

In honor of the almighty apple, Mrs. Honken brought in enough apples so that every student in the elementary could get one!  They were delicious.  We did a small writing activity related to apples. Watch for an upcoming apple story or two in the near future.

Fire Safety Week

Today we visited the Fire Station in Scandinavia.  We first viewed a video on fire safety, then got a tour of the station that included a lot of neat equipment.  Probably the neatest part was when students were allowed to enter the fire trucks!

Visit from Regie Routman

Today our class had the honor of having a very special guest.  Regie Routman, who is nationally known and an expert in literacy instruction, visited our classroom.  It was a  celebration of things we are doing well.  We enjoyed her visit very much.  It was an honor for her to be in our classroom.  The class do a wonderful job!

Taste of Norway

The Taste of Norway was Saturday, October 3rd.  It made me proud to see many 6th grade students volunteering their time to "teach" a lesson in the old school house.  It was fun for me as a teacher to sit back and watch them work.  My daughter Lucy loved her Santa craft project!  Might we have an inspiring teacher in this bunch?  I hope so!

Start Your Engines!

Today was the Balloon Powered Race Car Day!  You can tell that many students put a lot of thought into this project.  There was a lot of trial and error to making a successful race car.  Cars were noticed for being the fastest, going the farthest and fan favorite.  It was a great way to end the week!

Car Balloon Construction Day

Today was Day 1 for the Balloon Cars.  There are a lot of neat ideas from the students.  Can't wait to "RACE" on Thursday!

Reading Contracts-Homework

Today I sent home reading contracts.  Please take a look at the contract.  If your child would like to earn an A they should be reading 100 minutes a week.  They must have initials for days they read and return on Mondays.

HOMECOMING 2015

Black and Orange OH MY!  Wow were the halls filled with TBIRD pride.   The students were excited the entire day for the parade.  We brought in a good load of candy to share on Monday.
Hopefully the football team can pull out a win against WEGA.

Balloon Rocket

How far can a balloon travel on a string?  How fast will the balloon move?  Will the balloon go twice as far if it is twice as big?  These are some of the questions that students came up with prior to our experiment.  We once again used the scientific method to guide us through this very fun project.

9-11

Today we discussed a day many remember, 9-11.  The students in this class were not even born, yet they know many details of this event.  I'd like each student to interview one person who remembers how the day unfolded.  Hopefully this interview leads to a meaning discussion.

Personally for me, I remember this event at first being tragic.  But at the same time it showed how great of a nation we live in.  We were knocked down for a bit, but we showed our strength and got back up, stronger than ever.

Newton's First Law

As we have found out in Science class, Sir Isaac Newton had some pretty good ideas.  We have briefly studied his first law and applied it to an experiment and the scientific method.  Here is our question:  What happens to a penny when force is applied to only the paper?  Watch and find out!!

First Day!!!!

It was a wonderful day for everyone who entered I-S elementary today.  I was able to escort my daughter in for her first day of 4-K.  Parents, do you remember that day with your current 6th grader? Isn't it hard to believe that today was their last "first day" in this school?  How time flies!!!!!  This is a really good group of students, nice job parents!  Here's to a great school year!

Teamwork, rules for groups

We did a group activity in Science today.  In order to complete the task the group had to work together for one common goal.  All groups were able to complete the task.  Students then created a list of four things that successful groups are able to do.  FUN first experiment!

Suggestions for Successful Groups:
1.  Stay Happy:-)
2.  Trust Others
